🤖How AI Is Changing Heart
Disease Care – Benefits, Treatment Support & Regulation
Artificial
Intelligence is rapidly transforming cardiovascular medicine. In this session,
Dr.
Iris Panagiota efthymiou
Affiliation: Institute for Study Abroad
Presentation Type: Oral Presentation (Virtual)
Title: AI in cardiology: What
clinicians need and what policymakers must decide
🧠 What Is AI Used for in Cardiology?
AI is
used to:
✔ Interpret ECGs and cardiac imaging
✔ Predict sudden cardiac events
✔ Identify high-risk patients earlier
✔ Improve hospital efficiency
✔ Support clinical decisions
By
analyzing vast amounts of patient data, AI helps detect patterns linked to
heart disease before symptoms worsen.
🫀 Can AI Cure Heart Disease?
AI itself
does not cure heart disease. However, it helps improve outcomes by:
•
Supporting early diagnosis
• Personalizing treatment plans
• Enhancing monitoring of chronic heart conditions
• Reducing medical errors
• Improving survival through timely intervention
Better
prediction leads to better prevention and management.
⚠️ Why Oversight Is Essential
Since
cardiac errors can be fatal, AI must be carefully governed. Issues such as
algorithmic bias, unequal performance across populations, and unclear liability
require strong policy frameworks.
Clinicians
must remain responsible decision-makers, using AI as a tool—not as an
authority.
