🌍🥗 Socioeconomic, parental, and nutritional factors associated with congenital heart disease in children: Insights from a hospital-based case-control study in Kabul, Afghanistan

Presented by: Dr. Abdul Wahed Sidiqi

Congenital heart disease (CHD) remains one of the most significant causes of childhood illness and mortality globally. In resource-limited countries, the condition is often influenced by complex social, economic, and health-related determinants.

At the International Conference on Cardiology and Cardiovascular Science (CVS-2026), Dr. Abdul Wahed Sidiqi will present important findings from a hospital-based case-control study conducted in Kabul, Afghanistan.

The research was carried out at Ariana Medical Complex between February and August 2025 and included 414 families whose children underwent echocardiographic evaluation. By comparing confirmed CHD cases with non-CHD controls, the study identified key contributing factors.

🔎 Key Findings

• Low parental education was strongly linked to increased CHD risk.
• Families with limited income showed significantly higher odds of having affected children.
• Paternal unemployment and unstable occupations were associated with adverse outcomes.
• Maternal hypertension prior to conception substantially elevated risk.
• Poor maternal nutrition during pregnancy played a critical role.
• Underweight paternal status also demonstrated meaningful association.

🥗 Protective Factors

Encouragingly, several preventive measures were identified:

• Folic acid supplementation reduced the likelihood of CHD.
• Adequate calcium and vitamin D intake showed protective effects.
• Higher consumption of fruits and vegetables during pregnancy lowered risk significantly.

🌍 Public Health Relevance

This study underscores that congenital heart disease prevention extends beyond clinical treatment. Strengthening maternal healthcare services, improving nutrition awareness, promoting education, and addressing socioeconomic disparities are essential steps toward reducing CHD incidence.
